2019 marks the year The American Legion Post 141 Glenwood Iowa received its temporary charter and what a 100 birthday party this was! In the past few years, attendance has been less than stellar. This year invitations were mailed and social media was heavily utilized. In the past, the members have voted to place ads in the Opinion Tribune costing @$400. This year invitations were mailed for the cost of a few rolls of stamps, paper, envelopes and social media was free.
There were 65 Legion Family members RSVP’ed and over 125 showed up for the party! The food was spread thin with such an unexpected turn out on this cold, wintery day, but everyone was fed none the less. There were many raffle prizes such as a Weber Grill, cash, tickets to the Red-White NE game in April, Legion Centennial Pistol Raffle Tickets, Coins and Pins, Movie gift basket, patriotic gift basket, Legion blankets, VFW Car Raffle Tickets and so many raffles seemed to steal the dedicated time.
Our festivities kicked off with the POW Ceremony and a prayer from Chaplain Barry Hiller, USAF, ret. 2019 new members were recognized as was our Paid-Up-for Life (PUFL) members, Past Post Commanders, and continuous paid members at 5 year anniversary increments. The Legionnaires recognized the Auxiliary Ladies with yellow roses to show their appreciation and the 2018 Legionnaire of the Year, Larry Jones, was honored along with past Legionnaires of the Year. The Ladies Auxiliary and legion Riders recognized members of their units as well. The Commander asked for nominations from the floor and the election was held.
