Each year on Flag Day, Americans are reminded of the meaning carried by our nation’s flag and the respect it deserves.
At Harvey T. Rimel American Legion Post 141, we believe that respect continues even when a flag has become torn, faded, damaged, or no longer fit for display. When a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be retired in a dignified and respectful manner.
The American Legion has long recognized the importance of properly retiring unserviceable flags. Through its traditional Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags, the Legion provides a solemn way to honor the flag’s service and symbolism before it is respectfully retired.
As part of our Flag Day observance, Post 141 will retire torn and damaged flags as appropriate, following American Legion tradition and the spirit of proper flag etiquette.
Community members who have worn, torn, faded, or damaged American flags are encouraged to bring them to Post 141 for respectful retirement. We have a drop off station, a white mail box marked flags. Please ONLY place flags in the drop box. It fills fast with items other than flags on some occassions!

Flag Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is a reminder of the ideals, sacrifices, and freedoms represented by the American flag.
We are honored to help our community ensure that unserviceable flags are retired with the dignity they deserve.
